A few years ago, Prof. Pan Ruliang had the vision of creating a centre dedicated to biodiversity and primate research and conservation. His goal was to establish a hub for data collection and database management that would enable evidence-based conservation efforts in China. Additionally, the centre was designed to promote education and training while fostering engagement with external stakeholders in academia, government, and the broader community. Prof. Pan envisioned extending the center's reach to include neighboring countries in project development and implementation, thereby establishing transboundary collaborations.
Through his unwavering dedication and perseverance, this vision became a reality with the ceremonial inauguration of the center in August 2023 at Dali University. Situated in a region of exceptional biodiversity, Dali University has earned a reputation for excellence in biodiversity science, making it the ideal host for this ambitious endeavor. Its strategic location near a global biodiversity hotspot provides unparalleled opportunities to implement impactful research and conservation activities.
Prof. Pan's legacy extends beyond the establishment of the center; it includes the launch of numerous initiatives focused on research prioritization, stakeholder engagement, fundraising, and media outreach.
Incoming Executive Director prof. Cyril C. Grueter will build on these efforts to fullfill the centre's ambitious goals: "I am deeply honored to follow in Pan's footsteps and continue building on his remarkable achievements to ensure the centre fulfills its mission of advancing primate/biodiversity research and conservation and fostering sustainable development".
